Ember Resistant Zone within 5 feet of structure and attached decks  (0-5 ft)

Update 3/4/2025:

In response to the Governor's Executive Order N-18-25, the Board of Forestry and Fire Protection will be holding a public workshop to discuss changes to California’s Defensible Space regulations. AB 3074 (2020) directs the Board of Forestry and Fire Protection to develop regulations to establish a 0-5 foot “ember-resistant zone,” adding to the existing two-zone defensible space system that requires fuel and vegetation management around structures in two concentric areas of 0-30 and 30-100 feet. The public is invited to inform the Board of your support, concerns, and input. Attend the forum in person or remotely (pre-registration required) to share your thoughts. You can also submit comments via email - PublicComments@bof.ca.gov

What we do know:

These regulatory changes will be required in the entirety of the State Responsibility Area and in those areas of the Local Respondibility Area classified as Very High Fire Severity Zone.

New Construction will have these requirements first (Estimated 1/1/2023)

Existing Construction will have these requirements sometime around 1/1/2024.
