The Sonoma Valley Fire District (SVFD) has significantly enhanced its wildfire prevention and vegetation management efforts, thanks to funding from Measure H. This countywide sales tax initiative, approved by voters in March 2024, provides dedicated resources to bolster fire protection services throughout Sonoma County.

Roles and Responsibilities of the Vegetation Management Division

SVFD's Vegetation Management Division is tasked with reducing wildfire risks through proactive vegetation control and community engagement. Key responsibilities include:

  • Defensible Space Inspections: Conducting assessments to ensure properties comply with state and local defensible space requirements, such as those outlined in Sonoma County Municipal Code Chapter 13A and Public Resources Code §4291.
  • Fuel Reduction Projects: Implementing programs like chipping services and prescribed burns to manage overgrown vegetation and reduce fuel loads in high-risk areas. Additionally the division is working with partner agencies Fire Safe Sonoma, CalFire, and Measure H Fuels Crews to accomplish larger projects managing vegetation designed to provide for a safer community.
  • Community Outreach and Education: Hosting workshops and providing resources to educate residents on best practices for maintaining fire-safe properties.
  • Collaboration with Agencies: Working alongside local, state, federal agencies, and local non-governmental orginizations to coordinate large-scale vegetation management and fire prevention strategies.

Impact of Measure H Funding

Measure H has been instrumental in expanding SVFD's vegetation management capabilities. The funding has allowed for:

  • Staffing Enhancements: Hiring additional personnel dedicated to vegetation management and fire prevention efforts.
  • Equipment Acquisition: Purchasing specialized equipment necessary for efficient vegetation control and fuel reduction operations.
  • Program Expansion: Scaling up existing programs and introducing new initiatives aimed at mitigating wildfire risks across the district.

These advancements, made possible by Measure H, underscore SVFD's commitment to safeguarding the community against wildfires through effective vegetation management and community involvement.
